JOB TITLE: City Planner CLASS: Negotiable
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB:
This is a professional position involving the municipal planning program. The work involves
implementation and enforcement of land use plans and regulations, including the Comprehensive Plan,
Zoning Ordinance, and Subdivision Regulations. The Planner acts as technical advisor to the Planning
Commission, Board of Zoning Adjustment, and Historic Preservation Commission, as well as providing
assistance on land development matters to professional land planners, engineers, surveyors, and
citizens.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Assist the Director in administering the City’s planning programs and activities.
- Review development proposals, including map amendment requests, development plans, subdivision plats, variances, conditional use permits, and certificates of appropriateness for compliance with plans, regulations and guidelines.
- Perform field reviews to gather information relating to land use and development projects.
- Prepare written reports with recommendations of development proposals for Boards and Commissions.
- Provide technical assistance to the public, land developers, land planners, engineers, and attorneys concerning planning processes and regulations.
- 6. Perform additional duties as required.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography or related field.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of urban planning, as they pertain to community
- development, zoning and subdivisions.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, officials, other
- agencies and the general public.
- Ability to present technical information clearly to the general public, professional land planners,
- engineers, surveyors, and attorneys.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Neat in appearance, high moral character and not convicted of a felony crime.
- Possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
- Ability to review development plans, subdivision plats, and construction plans.
- Physically capable of performing essential job functions.
- Ability to operate modern office equipment.
